Life in a Metro

Designers: Ria John, Rohitha Remala, Prerna Sharma

Life in a Metro explores the theme of proximity, highlighting the juxtaposition of countless lives converging in urban environments, yet remaining isolated in their personal narratives. Inspired by the scenes of metropolitan living—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic—this lighting installation represents the idea of neighboring individuals, all within reach yet unknown to one another.

The lamps feature cube-shaped shades reminiscent of apartment windows, offering a soft, diffused glow that suggests the warm, lived-in spaces of homes. Each lightbox is positioned within a grid structure, evoking the architectural layout of a city, symbolizing both connectivity and separation. The textured surfaces of the shades—crafted from natural fibers and geometric patterns—further reflect the individuality of each "apartment" while reinforcing the idea of a shared yet divided urban experience.

As you peer into this piece, the lighting draws attention to the invisible lines between people, highlighting the contrast between physical proximity and emotional distance. Life in a Metro invites viewers to reflect on the many stories and lives that unfold just beyond their walls.
